Stranger Things Season 4's Biggest Mystery Will Be The Plot Point for Season 5

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4.

Stranger Things Season 4 divulged so many mysteries about the show including the creation of the Upside Down, how the Mind-Flayer was created, and Vecna's origin story, who appears to be the root of the eerie dimension. However, one unanswered mystery that Season 4 failed to uncover is why the date in the Upside Down was stuck in the same date Will got abducted in Vecna's dimension.

When the Hawkins gang was exploring through the Upside Down — which they thought to be an accurate copy of the parallel world, they discovered that the dimension is stuck in the past. The time on the Upside Down was frozen on November 6th, 1983, the exact date Will Byers went missing from Season One. Thankfully, according to the showrunners, the mystery being unresolved was completely intentional and will be answered in the final season.

“The biggest [question] being we set up in the Volume One finale how the Upside Down is stuck in time on the day of Will’s disappearance," Ross told Deadline. "That’s something we don’t answer in Volume Two, and that is really the key plot point, the key question that is going to drive our final season as we try to wrap up this story and give the rest of the answers out.”

Of course, there are already several theories arising regarding this mystery, including a theory that suggests Vecna created Hawkins. But a more obvious explanation is that the day Will went missing, was also the day Eleven opened the gate.

Aside from that, Upside Down's frozen time and its mysterious connection to Will's disappearance might be a hint that the impending finale would refocus on Will. After all, Will was the first victim of the horrifying dimension, and the season’s conclusion spots Will having the tingling sensation again around his neck which usually means that the monster from Upside Down is very close. The Duffer Brothers also recently revealed that Stranger Things Season 5 will center more on Will Byers, and will solve mysteries that go back from Season One.

All episodes of Stranger Things Season 4 are now available to stream on Netflix.
