Will Byers Would Be a Major Focus on Stranger Things Season 5

Noach Schnapp's Will Byers remained a significant character from Stranger Things Season 1 to 3. After being kidnapped in the Upside Down in the first season, being possessed in Season Two, and going through severe PTSD in Season Three, fans expected that Will would have another substantial role for Stranger Things Season 4. However, Season 4 diverted the focus on Will and emphasized certain characters like Eddie, Steve, and Max.

In an interview with Collider, Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that Will's story would go back to a major focus in Stranger Things Season 5. Although Season 4 didn't fully explore Will's coming-of-age tale, Season 5 intends to complete the character's narrative which goes back from Season One.

"Will's going to be a big part and focus, is really all I can say of Season 5, in his journey," Matt said. "We're starting to see his coming of age, really. Which has been challenging for a number of reasons, some of which are supernatural. But you're starting to see him come into his own."

"[It's] setting up us coming full circle back to Season 1," Ross added. "I think you'll see that with a couple of the character arcs, not just with Will. But also with Steve and Nancy, and her relationship with Jonathan where things are not fully resolved. The characters have maybe made steps, like in the case of Will, but that journey isn't over yet. All of that is going to play a huge role as we try to wrap this thing up next season."

Having Will pivotal again in the final season of Stranger Things totally makes sense. After all, Will introduced the audience to the eerie world of Upside Down, and if he wasn't kidnapped, the Hawkins gang wouldn't be entangled with the dimension at all.

The conclusion of the season also spots Will feeling a strange sensation again at the back of his neck, which usually means that a monster from Upside Down is active or very close. That said, Will is somehow still affiliated with the supernatural dimension. Now that Stranger Things Season 5 will see the epic finale of the Netflix hit, it would absolutely be interesting what role Will would play to seal off the Upside Down.

All episodes of Stranger Things Season 4 are now available to stream on Netflix.
