After a successful release of Stranger Things Season 4 on Netflix last week, fans are still not over how the Volume 2 ended and left a lot of questions hanging in the balance. The Duffer Brothers reveal that there is an alternate ending where they almost killed off a major character – Max Mayfield.
In Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2, Sadie Sink’s character, Max Mayfield’s fate remains hanging in the balance as Vecna kills her only to be revived by Eleven in a miraculous save while in the mindscape. Max is currently in a coma with her limbs shattered. When Eleven tried to reach out to her in the mindscape again, she could not find Max.
However, the Duffer Brothers revealed in an interview with Variety that Max almost had a different ending, Ross said, “It was discussed as a possibility. For a while that is what was going to happen.”
Ross added that they wanted to spice things up a bit leaving a mystery for the fans, “We ended up in this... we wanted to end with a little more of a question at the end of the season. It's still really dark and if Max is going to be okay, we just don't really know. We wanted to leave it up in the air moving forward."
Max Mayfield has been a great addition to the cast since her debut in Stranger Things Season 2 and has been a fan-favorite since then. The show is known for keeping the main characters alive while the new ones are usually those who suffer the most tragic deaths like Eddie Munson in Stranger Things Season 4.
However, the fans seemed to have had enough of these deaths especially with Eddie Munson’s. They put up a petition on Change.org to bring Eddie back to the story and there are already more or less 50,000 signatures to date.
Max Mayfield’s fate remains unknown whether she would survive what happened to her in Stranger Things Season 4 finale and Season 5 is expected to answer why Eleven cannot reach through her in the mindscape. The cliffhanger is enough to baffle the fans whether Max really survived Vecna’s curse.
