We're now getting closer to the highly-anticipated fourth season of Stranger Things which has been in the works for a long time now thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic-related delay that led to the three-year wait from the last season. Unfortunately, it looks like certain information about the upcoming season is now making rounds online thanks to one of its merchandise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, images from the official Monopoly board game tie-in of Stranger Things season 4 are leaking online. The game's cards, which first circulated last month, are spoiling major plot points of the upcoming season.
As expected, the show's creators, the Duffer brothers, are not happy with the leak as both of them have been working hard on maintaining the secrecy of the upcoming season and they reportedly had a "total meltdown" when they learned about the leak. They weren't also consulted about the game.
A Reddit thread about the leak said that the game was bought at "a nationally recognized retailer and purchased fair and square by a consumer. Nobody stole it; nobody leaked a sample." However, the claims haven't been verified yet.
So what could be the reason for the game's alleged early release? The report's source indicated that while the producers have involvement and approval over the majority of the show's promotions and merchandising and its sheer scale is unlike any of the other Netflix originals, the release of the Monopoly game must have been accidentally approved for a go. As a result, "lessons have been learned" and "more cohesion" is expected for the merchandising of the fifth season.
It is unfortunate to learn that official merchandise for the upcoming season was accidentally released early which lead to the leak of certain spoilers online. If you are sensitive regarding the spoilers of the upcoming season, you might have to try your best to avoid encountering any information about it online until you watch the season. This is certainly not the first time that spoilers of a film or TV show leaked early online, but hopefully, it won't ever happen again in the future as it robs the viewers of the experience of getting surprised.
