Stranger Things Almost Killed Off Eleven During Its First Season

The second season of Stranger Things might have ended on a pretty positive note with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) going to the Snow Ball school dance together with Mike (Finn Wolfhard), but if the Duffer brothers went with their original plan, Eleven wouldn't even have made it to the second season of the series at all.

Netflix just recently released a Stranger Things tie-in book called Worlds Turned Upside Down, and according to Heroic Hollywood, it includes the original plan the Duffer brothers had for the series. According to the publication, the show was originally meant to be a miniseries, so the showrunners' early drafts of the story had to add some finality to it, including the death of Eleven.

"Eleven was going to sacrifice herself to save the day. That was always the end game. But once we realised that the show was potentially going to go on longer than one season, we needed to leave it more up in the air, because deep down we knew the show just wouldn't really work without Eleven. And at that point, we knew how special Millie was. If there was going to be more Stranger Things, Eleven had to come back."

But that's not all. The Duffer brothers also had other plans for Steve (Joseph David Keery). While fans loved Steve Harrington's transformation from a bully in season 1 to a protector and role model in season 2, the Duffers originally intended to turn Steven into a "giant douchebag" that fans wouldn't mind seeing dead in the first season of the series.

Stranger Things season 3 is set to premiere Summer 2019.
