Stephen King Will Add A Final Chapter To The Stand

Book readers might claim that they already know how the upcoming CBS All Access series The Stand will end. After all, it's just another adaptation of Stephen King's 1978 classic. However, it looks like the show will have a completely new conclusion. It has just been confirmed that King is writing a new chapter just for the series.

CBS has confirmed in a press release that the writer will pen "the final chapter" of The Stand which will "[provide] a new coda that won't be found in the book" (via io9). This means that anyone who has read the novel won't find out how the story truly ends unless they watch the series.

This shouldn't be much of a surprise considering that King has been changing the book's ending a few times. The original version of the novel concluded with Frannie's baby surviving the superflu and Stu ambiguously claiming he doesn't know if people can learn from their mistakes. However, King released an expanded version where it is revealed that Randall Flagg is still alive and has found a new tribe of dark-skinned people who worship him as a deity.

So what will happen in CBS' take on the book? It might be too soon to tell but there's a possibility that it could expand on Flagg's story. Either way, it's great to know that the series finale will be a complete surprise.

The Stand has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
