It seems like there's been a lot of factors that contributed to David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' exit from their planned Star Wars trilogy. And unexpectedly, one possible reason includes the fans of the beloved franchise.
The Game of Thrones showrunners were supposed to direct a new trilogy which involves a story surrounding the post-Skywalker Saga. Fans were shocked that Benioff and Weiss backed out in doing the anticipated project, solely because of conflicts with their heavy schedule.
However, The Hollywood Reporter claims that one source blamed the "toxic fandom" of the franchise, despite being surprised about the directors' exit.
This isn't entirely surprising given that Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi didn't exactly get pleasing reviews. It was a divisive film and some fans even claim that Johnson "ruined" the franchise with the movie he directed. This could be what the source claims to be "toxic." These kinds of comments potentially could have gotten into Weiss and Benioff's minds, which might have given them second thoughts and eventually backed out from doing the project.
And while this isn't confirmed to be true since THR's source was unnamed, the reason that the outlet mentioned doesn't seem to be too far from being one of the factors that resulted in the showrunners' leave. But then again, it could really just be conflicting schedules and we might be reading into this too much.
Given that Weiss and Benioff will no longer go through with the trilogy, it isn't looking good for Johnson too. Especially since he has always been vague about his progress about the trilogy.
