J.J. Abrams might not have meant Babu Frik to be a standout character of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, however, the Anzellan droidsmith quickly became a fan-favorite character, charming fans with his delightful way of talking and his adorable sense of humor.
Now, it looks like Star Wars fans are getting a brand new behind the scenes details about Babu Frik. Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,The Rise of Skywalker sound editor Matthew Wood reveals the commitment Babu Frik actress Shirley Henderson had to her role.
Not only did Henderson work on voicing the character, but she also dedicated time to learning puppeteering so that she could control Babu Frik and sync him up when she was voicing the character.
Interestingly enough, Henderson also came up with Babu Frik's language, giving him the adorable broken speech patterns that fans found so charming in the droidsmith.
"She was puppeteering while she was doing the improv for the character. She came up with that language and performed it that way. We preserved all of her production sounds, and that was entirely shot on set, live, with her own movement," the sound editor told the entertainment news outlet.
Star Wars fans didn't know it at the time because of Babu Frik's bizarre but adorable vocal patterns, but Henderson who provided the full voice for the character also appeared in the Harry Potter film franchise as Moaning Myrtle.
In the end, Henderson's dedication to the character really paid off. Babu Frik became an easy fan-favorite, giving Star Wars: The Mandalorian's Baby Yoda a run for his money.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is currently screening in cinemas.
