Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Trailer Reveals Return To Death Star II

The final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was just released and fans surely have a lot to take in. There's a lot of new footage from the trailer to decipher, including a glimpse of a fight between Daisy Ridley's Rey and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren which apparently takes place in a very unexpected location.

Seen in minute forty-nine (1:49) of the latest trailer, Rey and Kylo Ren's battle takes place in what seems to be the ruins of the Death Star II. Some fans noticed this major detail and a fan took to Twitter to point out the scene along with a homage to the Return of the Jedi. Check out the tweet below (via Twitter user snrkjj).

If you recall, a fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi took place in the second Death Star. Wherein Palpatine watched the fight ensue in order to bring Luke to the dark side. The scene from the latest trailer is very likely a homage to the iconic scene in ROTJ.

It isn't surprising to see details like these done by J.J. Abrams, especially since he made it his goal to make The Rise of Skywalker have a cohesive ending as much as he can. Also worth noting is that Abrams is known to be reviving original designs just like he did in The Force Awakens; so it makes sense that references like these are likely to show up.

The wreckage of the Death Star II made many wonder what exactly happened to it. Even though it is seen in the trailer, there's no telling if the entirety of Rey and Kylo Ren's fight actually happens in it. Regardless, it's a cool detail to add from the original trilogy into the latest movie.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres on December 20, 2019.
