It looks like Hideo Kojima has found himself another admirer. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams has just complimented the video game director, claiming that Kojima is a true master of his craft.
Abrams recently spoke to IGN about Kojima's works and it's pretty obvious that the man truly looks up to the former Konami vice president. First, Abrams explained how the team comes up with a way to draw people in.
"The dream, though, is that the storyteller, the game designer, the filmmaker, they actually have a secret, more important thing that they're also doing," Abrams said. "That there's actually another layer, another reason for the thing to exist. Another message that they're trying to express. And when something is made great, with that intention, I think it resonates, and it has a power that's greater than just the thing that you think it is."
He continued by saying that it usually doesn't work for other games. However, Abrams believes that Kojima doesn't have this particular problem.
"If there's an intention that goes deeper in the creation, it's felt in the playing," Abrams stated. "The idea that you can combine both, and he's done this before and is clearly doing it again, telling a great story and doing it in an interactive medium, it's a tightrope. It's a very challenging thing. But if there is a master of the form, of taking what is the fun of a game, but the satisfaction of a narrative story, you know combine those together into one piece, that master is Hideo Kojima."
It's an awesome description of Kojima and a fitting one considering that his new game Death Stranding is truly immersive and boasts of the unmistakable Kojima trademark. We're hoping that Abrams has drawn inspiration from Kojima as he worked on The Rise of Skywalker. If so, then the sequel is something to truly look forward to.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will premiere on December 20.
