Star Wars Study Reveals That Kelly Marie Tran And Female Fans Get The Most Hate Speech

The Star Wars fanbase might be filled with energy and passion, but some fans can take their anger and dissent too far, personally attacking the franchise's cast and crew when they don't like the films. Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and actress Kelly Marie Tran have been the most recent recipients of fans insults and attacks.

Now, The Washington Post has a new study scrutinizing the various Star Wars posts on Twitter and it reveals that female Star Wars fans are subjected to more harassment than their male counterparts. The study also revealed that Tran and her character Rose Tico receive sixty percent more hate speech than other posts related to the Star Wars franchise.

Apparently the use of offensive language and hate speech isn't that excessive on Twitter, however, the "modest but clear presence" of the negative language shows that "people use degrading language more frequently when they talk about women and minorities and when they talk to female fans."

The data doesn't come as quite a surprise. There has been a certain level of toxicity in the Star Wars fanbase. Sure, not everyone might like each and every Star Wars film that comes out, but honestly fans don't need to personally attack the cast and crew of the franchise. Objective criticism is possible, after all.

Even worse is that some Star Wars fans go ahead and take drastic measures when they don't get what they want – going as far as editing female characters out of films and sometimes creating petitions to have films remade.
