Star Wars: Rogue Squadron director Patty Jenkins shared a surprising update on the development of the long-gestated project.

First announced by Lucasfilm in December 2020, the movie would have introduced a new generation of starfighter pilots in the galaxy far, far away. It was originally slated to release in theaters in December of last year.

However, the project has experienced several delays and pushbacks since then and it made a lot of fans wonder whether the movie will still happen at some point in the future.

In an interview with the Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins revealed that Rogue Squadron is back in development. She became available to work on the project again after the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3.

"So, when I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, I thought maybe I'll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3. So we did a deal for that to happen, started a deal, but I thought I was doing Wonder Woman," she said.

"When that went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, 'Oh, we gotta finish this deal.' We finished the deal right as the strike was happening. So I now owe a draft of Star Wars and so we will see what happens there. You know, like, who knows?"

Jenkins also acknowledged that there is no guarantee that the movie will move forward to production since Lucasfilm is working on multiple theatrical projects at the moment.

"And so we will see what happens there. You know, like, who knows? It's hard, they have a hard job in front of them of what's the first movie they're gonna do," the director added.

"They have other directors who have been working, but I am now, you know, I'm back on doing Rogue Squadron and we'll see what happens. We need to develop, you know, get it to where we're both super happy with it."

This update will come off as a surprise for some fans since they might have an impression that the project has been shelved given the lack of updates from the past several months.

Now, it looks like there is still a possibility that the movie could happen. However, it might still take a while since Lucasfilm is prioritizing other projects such as The Mandalorian & Grogu as the next Star Wars movies.
