Star Wars, Pikotaro Lead Sculptures in Sapporo Snow Festival

It's the season of snow in Japan right now, and as such, the annual snow festival held in Sapporo is already underway.

Among the attractions in the 68th Sapporo Snow Festival are the 200 sculptures made from snow. Not all of them are just pretty figures, as some got political, while others got commemorative.

For instance, Star Wars fans would be delighted to know that there are sculptures of some of the characters to commemorate the 40th year anniversary of the franchise since its first movie was released in theaters.

Those who like J-Pop culture would probably know the gigantic face of the man who made the song that was stuck in everyone's heads. Pikotaro, the Japanese comedian also earned his place in the snow festival bearing his wide smiling face and shades. From the photo via Japan Times, he doesn't seem to be carrying a pen, a pineapple, or a pen, so thanks heavens. Still, the sculpture itself is impressive, since it is among the sculptures that were created by locals in the area.

U.S. President is also set to steal the show with his own image. Japan Today has an image of the recently elected president, and even here, he doesn't seem happy at all. He has the signature scowl and shouting face, something that the sculptors were able to capture quite perfectly.

A lot of visitors who have already seen the showcase at the festival have nothing but praise for the sculptures there.

"I was impressed by the intricacy of the snow sculptures although they are large. I'm looking forward to the illumination at night."

More than two million people are expected to visit the festival, which will be held until Feb. 12 in three different areas of the city.
