Maz Kanata might have been an old but spry creature that fans got to meet in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, however, the Force-sensitive humanoid Pirate Queen of Takodana was originally given a much older look by Star Wars' creature design time.
This week, Lucasfilm concept artist Christian Alzmann decided to share his original design for Maz Kanata on Instagram, showing an older-looking version of the Takodana fighter in a brand new post.
"Early unused design for Maz for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I was trying to get the feeling of thick, heavy glasses without using them in the design," Alzmann wrote in the caption of the post.
In the final version of the character in The Force Awakens, Maz Kanata wears up some of the chunkiest specs we've seen in the Star Wars franchise. The joke comes out when the movie reveals Maz taking off her glasses to show her teeny tiny eyes.
While Alzmann's unused version of Maz doesn't seem to have the signature eyeglasses, she still has those tiny little eyes, though they have more of a protrusion than the final design. Alzmann's take on Maz also has sticky out ears, making her look older than she seems to be in Episode VII.
While this version of Maz Kanata does give the fighter a more mature look, we like that Maz looks spry and trendy for her age in The Force Awakens.
