Star Wars: Mark Hamill Posts Emotional Tribute To Peter Mayhew

The world is still mourning the death of Peter Mayhew, the man who originally portrayed Chewbacca in Star Wars: A New Hope. While fans are posting great messages about how Mayhew affected their lives, Mark Hamill might have the best and most emotional tribute to his former co-star.

Hamill took to Twitter to share several awesome pictures of himself with Mayhew, including a rare behind-the-scenes photo showing an unmasked Chewbacca hugging Luke Skywalker. Take a look at the images below.

"He was the gentlest of giants-A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile & a loyal friend who I loved dearly-I'm grateful for the memories we shared & I'm a better man for just having known him. Thanks Pete," Hamill wrote before adding the hashtags #RIPPeterMayhew and #Heartbroken. He also tagged Mayhew's Twitter account @TheWookieeRoars.

Mayhew first appeared as Chewbacca in A New Hope and would play the role until Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He also helped his successor Joonas Suotamo prepare for the role as the new Chewbacca. In addition to that, Mayhew also commited himself to helping others.

An excerpt from the Mayhew family's statement reads as follows:

"For more than 30 years Peter traveled all over the world spending time with his fans and friends. Peter developed lifelong friendships with the other cast members and his fans while on the convention circuit touching the lives of millions. As he realized over the years the impact he could have, he became heavily involved with the 501st Legion, Wounded Warriors, Make-a-Wish, and other non-profit organizations."

Mayhew passed away of a heart attack on April 30 at his home in Boyd, Texas. He was 74 years old.
