Star Wars is home to a lot of alien races; Ewoks, Hutts, Jawas, and so on, the franchise is quite filled with them. One race that fans are still waiting to see depicted on-screen are the Bothans, who have been mentioned sparingly in the movies and cartoons but have yet to be shown to the audience. If this suggestion from a Star Wars executive means anything, it looks like the Bothans might not be aliens after all.
When asked why the Bothans did not appear in the recently-released Star Wars: Alien Archive book, executive and member of the Lucasfilm Story Group has hinted that the race might not be aliens after all. Considering their lack of on-screen presence, Disney and Lucasfilm can do what they want to when it comes to their eventual reveal.
Don't expect to see Bothans depicted in any form of Star Wars media anytime soon, unless we get a surprise reveal from Episode IX or the Resistance animated series. Only time will tell if the Bothans are aliens who are undiscovered yet or are just humans with a wacky name. Either, there are worse ways to build up a fictional universe.
Fans also shouldn't take the statement too seriously since Disney and Lucasfilm can always change their minds in regards to their appearance. The fact that they haven't popped up much in the various forms of Star Wars media is pretty surprising. We'll have to wait and see if some kind of announcement is made in the future.
Star Wars: Episode IX comes out on December 20, 2019.
