Star Wars: Kathleen Kennedy Requested the Hiatus from Disney CEO Bob Iger

Star Wars is expected to take a break after The Rise of Skywalker with the next theatrical release coming out in 20122, and though some fans are bummed about this decision, it was something that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had requested from Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Talking to The LA Times, Kennedy explains:

"We're literally making this up from whole cloth and bringing in filmmakers to find what these stories might be… It can take a while before you find what direction you might want to go. We need the time to do that."

Though the main trilogy entries have been successes, Lucasfilm has admittedly had problems when it came to the anthology films. Rogue One may be a hit, but it was a BTS nightmare with Lucasfilm hiring Tony Gilroy to take over reshoots for the final act of the movie. And though fans loved Solo, it was a marketing and BTS disaster as well, with original directors getting replaced and what is considered an underwhelming box office performance.

Even the 2022 movie has already caught its first snag, with original directors David Benioff and D.B. Weiss leaving the project.

Though I'm against it, I think a hiatus may be a great idea for the franchise to find its bearings again. While I do like the one film per year format, I guess it doesn't leave too much room for planning. Besides, Lucasfilm could be open to more risky projects now that Disney+ is an option.

For now, we wait for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which hits theaters this Dec. 20.
