Lucasfilm Interested in Exploring Other Franchises Outside of Star Wars

It looks like Lucasfilm might have plans working on other franchises outside of Star Wars after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker puts an end to the Skywalker saga.

Speaking in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Lucasfilm President tried to discuss the future of Star Wars after the premiere of The Rise of Skywalker next week. The film is going to mark the end of an era for the franchise, and everyone's wondering whether a future outside of the Skywalker saga is going to be a success.

After discussing the future format of the franchise and after reiterating the need to "start thinking about how to segue into something new and different," Kennedy revealed how Lucasfilm was pushing for new material outside of Star Wars.

Not only is Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jonathan Kasdan working on a series based on the cult classic movie Willow, but it seems like Lucasfilm has been looking into Children of Blood and Bone, a fantasy novel by Tomi Adeyemi,

The book was recommended to Kennedy by Michelle Rejwan after visiting a London bookshop, and the Lucasfilm president found herself enchanted by Children of Blood and Bone's story and themes which she believed to have echoed the same themes featured in Star Wars.

Kennedy then discovered that the rights to the book were owned by Fox. She then called Fox film executive Emma Watts and asked if Lucasfilm could develop a film based on the property together with the studio.

"I'm very excited at the possibility of being able to do things that expand our portfolio a little bit," she said. "You realize there's so much potential to do some pretty great things and to expand beyond just ‘Star Wars' is pretty exciting to think about."

Of course, this interest in other franchises shouldn't surprise fans. After all, Lucasfilm did create and produce Willow back in 1988, and that had nothing to do with Star Wars.

Guess Lucasfilm is just looking to head towards other directions within and outside the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
