Initial Star Wars: Rogue One Jyn Erso Origin Story was Deemed Too Similar to Rey's

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a film that followed closely to the adventures of Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso. Each member of the team came from various backgrounds, and hers was essential to the film's narrative. Instead of the background story we know of, Jyn's initial origin story was actually similar to that of Rey's, so changes were made.

There were a few things about the film's plot that have changed during development, including Jyn Erso's past. "At one point Jyn was already a Rebel soldier," writer Chris Weitz revealed in a recent interview with CineFix. "We toyed with various other possibilities."

"That she was a deserter, that she was a Rey-like scavenger," he added. "But obviously you can't do that once you learn what the other hand of the Star Wars universe is doing." Given that Rogue One was released just a year after J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens, it would feel quite repetitive if the team went with their initial scavenger-like origin story for Jyn. Fortunately, it all worked out in the end and Jyn had her own unique narrative of her past.

Of course, Jyn's fate in Rogue One makes her chances of returning slim to none, unless the project may feature a cameo in a flashback scene or some sort of recorded message. For now, the franchise will focus on Diego Luna's Cassian Andor, who'll star in his own prequel series set for release on Disney+.
