Star Wars: J.J. Abrams Reveals Favorite Twist in The Last Jedi

There is little doubt that Star Wars: The Last Jedi had several huge surprises. Interestingly, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams has spoken up about the many plot twists in Episode VIII and revealed which one was the best for him.

Abrams recently spoke to FOX 5 DC where he admitted that he was surprised by a lot of things that Rian Johnson did in The Last Jedi.

"Obviously, I had read the script. It wasn't like I just went to go see Last Jedi, but I saw what Rian was doing," Abrams said. "What I loved about his approach was that he was just subverting expectations, everywhere you looked."

But which plot twist was truly unexpected? Abrams revealed that it isn't that thing with Kylo Ren.

"I think that maybe the biggest surprise … you think Luke dying maybe was the biggest surprise or — I guess spoiler alert — Ren killing Snoke, there were certain things that felt like they were… weirdly, for me, the thing that was the most surprising was Phasma dying," he said.

In The Last Jedi, Captain Phasma faced off against Finn but was ultimately defeated when the ground beneath her gave way and she fell to her death. It's not exactly the death anyone was expecting for the character, especially since people were expecting her to show up again in Episode IX. Nevertheless, it gave Finn an awesome action sequence so I guess we'll have to accept it.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will premiere on December 20.
