Star Wars’ J.J. Abrams On The Pressures Of Working On Episode IX

Lucasfilm might have been keeping Star Wars: Episode IX's secrets under wraps, however, while fans have yet to see a new trailer for the highly anticipated Star Wars entry, director J.J. Abrams isn't shy when it comes to talking about the effort put into making the film.

Speaking in an interview with Fast Company, Abrams talks about how he had to take on the reigns of Episode IX in "an all-in leap of faith" with the pressure of meeting Lucasfilm's release date that had been set. Though there was a lot of pressure on Abrams, the director admits that the stress helped him and his team approach the project's story without really overthinking everything.

"I'm not complaining when I say this, but it was having to make decisions based on gut. When Damon Lindelof and I created Lost, we had essentially 12 weeks to write, cast, shoot, cut, and turn in a two-hour pilot with a big cast. And that was a crazy short amount of time," the director said, "The benefit of that was, we didn't have time to overthink. There wasn't time to get studio notes that end up sometimes taking you in lateral positions and making you adjust things—death by a thousand cuts—to a place where something doesn't resemble what it should be, and you can't remember why you got there or how."

There's a lot of excitement building up over Episode IX. Not only is the film the final entry in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, it's also the culmination of the past forty years of the franchise, closing out the Skywalker saga.

Right now fans are patiently waiting for the film's panel at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, anticipating the release of the film's very first teaser trailer at the convention.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
