Star Wars: Game Of Thrones Showrunners' Film Could Be Franchise's New Movie, Not Rian Johnson Trilogy

It's no secret that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be the final film in the Skywalker Saga, but what will happen next for the franchise? A new report suggests that the next Star Wars film will be from the Game of Thrones showrunners instead of the Rian Johnson trilogy.

The report from We Got This Covered cites an anonymous source who claims that the film from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss is already expected to be the follow-up to The Rise of Skywalker. This would mean that Johnson's own trilogy, which is expected to focus on a new generation of Force users, could be pushed back to a later release date.

Interestingly, Johnson himself has somehow hinted at the delay of his Star Wars trilogy. It was previously reported that the Knives Out director is still "talking to Lucasfilm" about the project but refused to elaborate on how far he has gone with the development. Although it is possible that Johnson is simply trying to remain secretive about his trilogy, there is a chance that Disney wants to focus on other aspects of the franchise.

Of course, the Star Wars film from Benioff and Weiss are not the only projects to look forward to. We also know that Altered Carbon showrunner Laeta Kalogridis is working on the script for a Knights of the Old Republic movie and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has been confirmed to work on a Star Wars movie of his own. Any of these films could be the next big thing for Star Wars. For now, we'll have to wait for new updates after the premiere of Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters on December 20.
