Star Wars Director Rian Johnson Seems To Be Casting Doubt On His Trilogy

Lucasfilm might have commissioned Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson to work on a new trilogy for everyone's favorite galaxy far, far away, but it looks like the director may be casting doubt on his new Star Wars project.

Johnson just recently spoke in an interview with BANG Showbiz, and during the discussion, the director was asked when fans could expect to see the filmmaker working on a Star Wars movie again. Though the Star Wars director says that he's still talking with Lucasfilm about the trilogy, Johnson seems to be a bit doubtful about whether the movie really happens or not.

"Well, we'll see. I'm still talking to Lucasfilm, they're figuring out what they're doing and we'll see what happens," Johnson answered. "But I'd be thrilled if it happens, and I'm working on my own stuff too."

This doubt comes as a surprise. Whenever the director was asked about his trilogy, he would respond with certainty, debunking rumors that Lucasfilm had dropped his trilogy after all the backlash that surrounded The Last Jedi.

Johnson's film was met with commercial and critical success when it released back in 2017, however, it also became one of the most divisive entries in the franchise. Sure, the film may have taken Star Wars to a new direction, however, a vocal minority has been clamoring against the film, complaining about how The Last Jedi subverted fan expectations and "misused" legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

We're hoping that Johnson still gets a chance to do his trilogy though. Let's wait and see.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
