Star Wars: Episode IX Theory Suggests Luke Might Be More Than A Force Ghost

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) might be returning in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but after choosing to sacrifice his life to save the Resistance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, fans can only expect the Jedi Master to either appear in a flashback or appear as a Force Ghost in Episode IX.

But what if we get to see Luke as something entirely else in the film?

According to a new Star Wars fan theory that's been making the rounds on Reddit, Luke Skywalker may appear in The Rise of Skywalker in a level of existence that transcends traditional Force Ghosts. The subreddit thread tries to dissect a series of behind-the-scenes moments that may imply that Hamill is actually going to appear as the flesh-and-blood version of the Jedi Master in Lucasfilms' third and final sequel trilogy installment.

The theory takes note of Luke's death in The Last Jedi, saying that neither Rian Johnson's commentary on the death scene, the comic, nor the novelization of the film used the word "death" but instead said that Luke had "stepped into a larger world," or "disappeared."

It's an interesting theory, one that highlight's Hamill's interviews and his absence from Star Wars Celebration. However, fans have to remember that the Star Wars legend loves trolling the fanbase – he's made fun of fans so many times, playing them along for all the different theories that they cook up. We'll just have to wait and see before jumping to any wild conclusions about what's to come.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
