Star Wars: Episode IX Teaser Super Bowl Update

Today's going to be an official bummer for Star Wars fans because it looks like we won't be getting a Star Wars teaser trailer during the Super Bowl weekend this February.

Despite the multiple reports circulating online saying that Disney bought three slots of commercial airtime during the upcoming NFL Super Bowl game from CBS at a minimum of $5.1 million each, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the Mickey Mouse House did no such thing.

According to the entertainment news outlet, Disney did not confirm with them the reports that the studio had actually purchased and acquired an "undisclosed" number of ad spots at this year's Super Bowl LIII. Earlier reports said that the studio was purchasing air time to feature Disney's heavy 2019 slate, including Star Wars: Episode IX which is set for release on December 20, Captain Marvel which is set for March 8, Dumbo set for March 29, Aladdin set for May 24, Avengers: Endgame set for April 26, Toy Story 4 for June 21, and The Lion King for July 19.

This will definitely come as disappointing news to Star Wars fans.

Many had been hoping for some sort of footage – a teaser, a trailer, a behind-the-scenes video, anything – during the holiday season. While Lucasfilm kept mum, many continued to hope for the teaser to drop during January, and then finally in February during the Super Bowl game. After all, Lucasfilm did release the first teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story during the Super Bowl last year.

Unfortunately, it seems like Lucasfilm has other plans for the film's marketing. Guess we'll just have to be patient.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
