Peter Mayhew may have reprised Chewbacca in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but his physical condition has prompted Joonas Suotamo to take over the role moving forward. Star Wars Episode IX has just wrapped, and Suotamo shares a neat gift that he received from head of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy.
The letter reads:
Dear Joonas—
You have filled giant shoes in ways few could have done. Thank you for your continued devotion to bringing Chewie alive for a new generation.
Just to be clear, this isn't a screen-used Chewbacca suit, but a Kenner plush toy from 1977. Granted it's not an actual prop, it's still a pretty valuable collectible. I'm sure it's a great keepsake for working on one of the most beloved characters in the franchise.
For now we don't know if Chewbacca will ever make a return to the big screen. Solo was setting us up for a sequel, but after its underperformance, it seems that Lucasfilm may have shelved the project. If it's any consolation, buzz about the movie online has been mostly positive, and if Lucasfilm manages to launch it with a better marketing campaign, maybe Solo 2 may end up being a huge hit.
With the movie having wrapped, everyone is waiting for a big Star Wars Episode IX reveal. We don't know exactly when we'll get it, but it's very likely we have to wait until April for Star Wars Celebration 2019. Fingers crossed we get the reveal earlier.
Catch Star Wars Episode IX in theaters Dec. 20.
