Star Wars Episode IX: BB-8 Starts Shooting Today

Star Wars Episode IX started shooting a few days ago, but today marks the start of production of one of the most recognizable faces in the sequel trilogy—BB-8.

Puppeteer Brian Herring shared on Twitter:

Probably one of the most amazing things about BB-8 is the fact that he's a physical prop. The production actually has several versions of the droid depending on what kind of scene he has to shoot. There's a remote-control BB-8 that they can have for wide shots, and there's also the puppet version of BB-8 controlled by Herring when they need the droid to express a bit more character.

With all the things fans have to complain about when it comes to Star Wars, BB-8 is one of the characters which has managed to come out unscathed. Even the porgs have their own merry band of haters. Then again, with a fanbase like Star Wars, it's amazing if everyone agreed on one thing.

For now, we have no idea where we'll be in the story once Episode IX kicks in. Some believe there's going to be a time gap, and that could mean anything for BB-8 and the other characters. The droid has actually spent two movies mostly apart from his owner Poe Dameron, so it would be interesting to see the both of them actually work together in a film for once.

Star Wars Episode IX comes out Dec. 20, 2019.
