Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy recently opened up about the fan backlash against her upcoming Star Wars movie starring Daisy Ridley.

Last year, Lucasfilm officially announced that they are working on a new Star Wars movie that will bring back Ridley as Rey Skywalker in a story that takes place during the New Jedi Order era.

However, the project has received backlash from some fans as they called the director's hiring the franchise's "woke" move and her past comments have also been weaponized out of context.

In a recent interview, Obaid-Chinoy addressed her decision to sign on to direct the Star Wars movie.

"The story that interests me most is in Rey’s journey as a female Jedi. That’s how I can best bring my experiences to it," she said.

Regarding the backlash that the project has received, the filmmaker gave a diplomatic response where she iterated that she is more focused on balancing the nostalgia while still bringing in new audiences to the franchise.

"The greatest thing about Star Wars is that everyone has a personal connection to it. Everyone is passionate about it. And throughout the fandom, people have clear ideas about who should direct or what the stories should be about. I’m just drowning out those voices until I’m done," Obaid-Chinoy said.

"As a storyteller, I’m focused on drawing new moviegoers into the cinema, and bringing a sense of nostalgia that will appeal to older fans of the series."

As we've seen with the backlash on The Acolyte, it is clear that it has been challenging to please the entire Star Wars fandom and everyone has their view on how the franchise should move forward.

Obaid-Chinoy gave some wonderful points about the backlash as she decided not to bring too much attention to it and she would rather focus on telling Rey's next journey and what she can bring as an artist to give the franchise a fresh new spin.

The details regarding the project are still under wraps as the development is still ongoing, but Obaid-Chinoy revealed in another interview that the film will see Rey leading the Jedi Academy.
