Star Wars Claims Qui-Gon Jinn Was the Original 'Fake Skywalker' Before Rey

Ever since Rey called herself "Rey Skywalker" during the end of The Rise of Skywalker, it has basically become meme fodder for Star Wars fans, whether they like the movie or not. They've been calling themselves Skywalker and making funny videos where Rey says an entirely different last name in the end but it will always remain a polarizing topic. Well, Rey wasn't the first fake Skywalker since Secrets of the Jedi claims that Qui-Gon Jinn is kind of a Skywalker.

Secrets of the Jedi (via ScreenRant) is a tie-in book narrated by everyone's favorite Star Wars hero Luke Skywalker, as he details a number of characters and events from his perspective. When it comes to Qui-Gon Jinn, Luke says: "While he may not be a Skywalker by blood, Qui-Gon Jinn shares a deep connection to my family's history through the Jedi Order."

"He may not be a Skywalker by blood." That means Luke basically considers him a part of his family so you could argue that Qui-Gon Jinn is a Skywalker but not really. Granted, he did introduce Anakin Skywalker to the Jedi Council and mentored Obi-Wan Kenobi, who would eventually mentor Anakin but that doesn't mean he's a Skywalker per se.

That being said, Qui-Gon is easily one of the most important parts of Star Wars history, which is odd since his only movie was The Phantom Menace, which is worse than The Rise of Skywalker in terms of filmmaking and acting. Sure, it was probably planned better than the Disney sequels but that doesn't make it good.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is available now on Disney+ and other digital services.
