Star Wars Battlefront Spin-off Game Reportedly Canceled by EA

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order proved that EA was wrong about single-player games being dead, proving that the audience for these types of titles is still big. Granted, only EA had this really dumb mentality, with other game companies flourishing with awesome single-player games but we're happy to see the company learn from their mistakes. Interestingly enough, it looks like Jedi: Fallen Order wasn't the company's first idea for a new Star Wars game since there are reports that a Star Wars Battlefront spinoff was in development but was canceled last year.

According to Kotaku's Jason Schreier, one of the best gaming journalists around, the Star Wars Battlefront spinoff, code-named Viking, was going to play similarly to Battlefront but with some open-world elements. The game would have been developed by Burnout developers Criterion and EA Vancouver, though things didn't work out due to "too many cooks." Also not helping was the fact that both studios were in different countries and made for problematic development.

EA then pulled the plug on the project when it was clear that Viking wouldn't have been finished in a year. Criterion is back to working on the Need for Speed series so the company is at least working on something. It's a shame that this Star Wars Battlefront spinoff never came out since it would have been fun seeing how the game would have turned out.

Currently, Star Wars fans have a lot of options to play with on their gaming systems, from the rough-at-launch Star Wars Battlefront II to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which ended up doing so well that a sequel is underway. We'll probably see that game on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
