Back when Andor was first announced, it was reported that Tony Gilroy would helm the new Star Wars series. However, that plan didn't pan out although Gilroy stayed on to serve as the showrunner. So is it possible that the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-writer will helm the upcoming episodes of the show's second season? Gilroy has finally addressed whether he will direct Andor Season 2.
Back in 2020, Tony Gilroy was confirmed to write and direct Andor. Unfortunately, the Bourne Identity screenwriter ultimately decided against helming the episodes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, Gilroy continued to work on the Rogue One prequel and is expected to be involved in the second season.
So will Tony Gilroy direct episodes of Andor Season 2? The Bourne Legacy director recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter where he denied sitting on the director's chair.
"I am not," Gilroy said. "I can't. This job is just too huge. I don't have the time to spare. It's a really poor use of my time."
He continued by pointing out how much time Andor director Ariel Kleiman spends on his work on the second season.
"Ari Kleiman is out in Pinewood. We start shooting in November. He started prepping three weeks ago. He's got his hands full out there just to get to November," Gilroy stated.
Although he isn't directing Andor Season 2, Gilroy did point out that he had considered the idea.
"There was some fantasy that I would end up doing the last block, but I just can't, to be honest with you," he said.
We can't really blame Tony Gilroy for refusing to direct Andor Season 2. Still, we're hoping that he will continue to play an important role in how the second season will be produced.
The next episode of Andor will premiere on Disney+ on September 28, 2022.
