Star Wars and Pokemon are taking over the toy industry, which outpaced retrail sales as a whole with a 5% increase from 2015 to 2016, grossing a total of $20.4 billion in U.S. retail sales, NPD reports.
Star Wars topped the list for toys with $760 million in total US sales, surpassing 2015 by $60 million. Over the eyar, Pokemon saw the highest growth, followed by Batman v Superman, Trolls, and Finding Dory all getting significant growth thanks to coinciding films.
Thanks to Star Wars, Collectibles was the top growing category, which accounted for 1.8 billion dollars or 9 percent of the total sales in the toy industry. The category includes Funko POP figures, blind packs, and various other high-volume collectibles. Since a lot of people are buying more lower-priced items, the net is increased.
However, there was a decrease in toy sales between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The first three weeks of December saw decreases in sales but it resulted in major increase of 28% for the week before Christmas. There was also decrease of growth in volume per sale in online stores.
