Star Trek, Supergirl and More Get 2016 GLAAD Nominations

This year's GLAAD awards nominations have been released and sci-fi and fantasy are scoring big. GLAAD Media Awards "recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives." The award is bestowed by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

A lot of works from the sci-fi and fantasy genres were nominated this year. Star Trek: Beyond recieved a nomination for "Outstanding Film: Wide Release" thanks to its gay character, Hikaru Sulu. Cartoon Network's Steven Universe cartoon recieved an "Outstanding Comedy Series" nomination for its vast array of queer relationships. Supergirl, Wynonna Earp, Shadowhunters and Orphan Black all recieved "Outstanding Drama Series" nominations.

However, it was sci-fi and fantasy comics that really cleaned up when if came to representation. Marvel's All-New X-Men, Black Panther and Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat all got nominated for Outstanding Comic Book. On the DC side of things, the Love is Love anthology created by IDW Comics and DC Comics to honor victims of the Orlando Shooting recieved a nomination, as did DC Bombshells and Midnighter/Apollo. Outside of DC and Marvel, Lumberjanes, Saga and The Woods were all nominated.

This year is going to be a rough one for the LGBTQ community in many ways, so it feels good to honor some awesome characters and stories. What do you think should win? As much as I love Star Trek, I feel the other nominee was more overt about representation. I think the Love is Love anthology and Lumberjanes are both strong contenders for the comic book category.

The 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards will be held on April 1 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
