There is still no news about when the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be coming out. So far, the Star Trek spin-off is expected to premiere sometime in 2023, after Picard season 3, which completed filming in March 2022.

When was Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Renewed?

Paramount announced the renewal of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in January 2022, before the series' first episodes premiered. Strange New Worlds was not the only Star Trek show renewed – other Star Trek spin-offs like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds director and producer Chris Fisher Tweeted on July 2, 2022, celebrating the end of filming for the second season of Strange New Worlds.

Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura

Most of the cast members from the first season are returning for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2.

The USS Enterprise Crew

Anson Mount leads the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and Christina Chong as La'an Noonien Singh. We will also see Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. Joseph M'Benga.

Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk

As the first season of Strange New Worlds was coming to a close, a new member joined the crew. Paul Wesley (known for playing several characters in the hit TV series Vampire Diaries) jumped into the USS Enterprise as the young James T. Kirk.

Chief Engineer Hemmer will not return (but Scotty might)

During Strange New Worlds episode 9, Bruce Horak's Chief Engineer Hemmer sacrificed himself to keep the crew alive. After being infected with Gorn eggs, Hemmer repaired the generator but was poisoned by the newly hatched Gorn young. He lured the other Gorn hatchling and then closed the ship's bay to prevent the Gorn from infecting more people, dying in the process.

Hemmer's death was very emotional for many fans of Strange New Worlds, and it effectively meant that Horak would no longer be returning for season 2. This means the USS Enterprise needs a new Chief Engineer, so will Scotty finally be signing up?

Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas

We know that Star Trek: Strange New World is returning for season 2, but the plot of the series is still a secret. The cast of the series promised that the next season will be bigger and better. When actress Melissa Navia (who plays Erica Ortegas) spoke with CinemaBlend, she described the quality of the script they were receiving for Strange New Worlds season 2.

I think I would even go so far as to say it's even better than 1, and Season 1 we are really happy with. Season 2, we just keep getting these scripts that are just knocking it out of the park. It incorporates Trek, and it incorporates history, it incorporates actual science and technology. And then it interweaves it in a way that makes you want to be on the Enterprise. It makes you really fall in love with this world and be a part of it. Season 2 we're gonna go to places that you just didn't expect, couldn't expect, but you're gonna be really happy that we did. People are already talking about Season 3 and like my head is just trying to wrap its head around Season 2, we're like barreling toward the end. We have some of the biggest scenes we've filmed yet, especially for me, to come still. So, very exciting.

When the cast appeared at the San Diego 2022 Comic-Con, they talked about the possible developments their characters will go through. We may hope to get to know La'an more while T'Pring and Nurse Chapel continue with their love triangle with Spock, who is still at odds with his humanity (in classic Spock style).

When Deadline interviewed executive producer Akiva Goldsman, he was asked about the first season's finale.

… you have to remember that we made this show before knowing if anybody would like this show. So even though there is a promise of more, right? But at the same time, for me the episode is complete. At the same time, because we are coming back, it does open out into the possibility of continuing story. By the way, now it does actually continue into Season 2, but when we made it, we didn't know. So it was in its own way our attempt to close off the arc that started it and therefore fundamentally I guess, you know, the idea that if we had been a one season object, we would've been proud to end that way.

Strange New Worlds and Lower Deck Crossover

During the Comic-Con, we also learned that Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, an animated Star Trek series, will be crossing over. How they will accomplish this feat is still a mystery, but we may see an animated Enterprise crew, a live-action USS Cerritos crew, or a little bit of both.
