Star Trek DIscovery: Sonequa Martin-Green on Burnham's Relationship with Spock

We know that Star Trek: Discovery takes place in a timeline very close to the original series, but we didn't expect the two generations to cross over so soon. Though he has been teased well enough in the first season, Spock will now be making an appearance in Season 2, and Sonequa Martin-Green talks about her character Burnham's relationship with the world's most famous half-Vulcan.

Talking to IGN, Martin-Green explains, "I will say... that it is not a simple relationship [between Spock and Burnham]. It is a very complicated relationship. It's a highly emotional relationship. And it will take some work."

She also says that the ‘Red Angel' seen in the trailer will have some significance in the relationship between Burnham and Spock; I have a feeling it also has something to do with the connection that Burnham has with her adoptive father Sarek. Martin-Green continues: "The Red Angel appears to Michael Burnham at a very, very critical moment. And then what I find out later is that Spock has also seen this same Red Angel, but when he was a child."

Throughout the first season, we already get the feeling that Burnham is somehow standing in Spock's shadow, but I didn't expect that they'd bring the character into the show so soon. By the looks of it, Spock has gotten himself into some kind of trouble, and it will be up to Burnham to bail him out somehow.

I can't help but feel that we're going to see appearances from more original Trek characters the longer Discovery trudges along. I can't wait to meet a young cadet Kirk or McCoy.

Catch Star Trek: Discovery 2 when it returns to CBS Jan. 17.
