Star Trek Discovery Actor Explains Why Adira Was Addressed By Wrong Pronouns

There is little doubt that one of the most exciting things about Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 is the introduction of non-binary characters. But why did the crew of Discovery actually address Adira as she/her? Blu del Barrio had an interesting explanation of why this happened in the series.

Del Barrio spoke to Syfy Wire about their debut on Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 and at one point, they were asked why Adira is addressed as she/her on the show. Not surprisingly, the actor confirmed that this will be explained right away.

"Yeah, so that will definitely be addressed. And Adira is non-binary. Even when people are using she/they pronouns, for Adira, because they have not shared their identity with the Discovery crew. Yes," del Barrio said. They continued by stating that Adira's situation reflected their personal life.

"This was basically the case because I still wasn't really out to my family and I didn't want to be out on screen as a character who was out until I was," del Barrio added.

This is an awesome confirmation from the actor, who admitted that although it was a challenge, they believed it was for the best.

"It was weird and very surreal, but I really wanted it to be an accurate representation. I didn't want to do anything that I hadn't done yet," del Barrio said.
