Last week, American comedian and television host Bill Maher angered Marvel fans by dismissingthe death of comic book legend Stan Lee and those mourning his loss. Now, the pop culture icon's team at POW! Entertainment has decided to address the "disgusting comments" that The Politically Incorrect host made against Lee and against the comic book industry.
Posting an open letter on their website, POW! fought back against Maher, letting the comedian know that great comic book writers like Lee always "make us feel, make us think, and teach us lessons that hopefully make us better human beings."
Aiming at the comedian's narrow-mindedness, POW! also wrote that one of the most important things that Lee taught his readers was the value of tolerance and respect.
"...Thanks to that message, we are grateful that we can say you have a right to your opinion that comics are childish and unsophisticated. Many said the same about Dickens, Steinbeck, Melville and even Shakespeare," the entertainment company continued in its letter.
POW! definitely defended Lee with grace, lambasting Maher for his small-minded thinking yet at the same time respecting his rather irksome opinion about Lee's death and the comic book industry. Maher isn't the only one who thinks that comic books are simply for children and that well, in the words of the television host, something that "you moved on" from, focusing on "to big boy books without pictures."
While Maher's comments are especially rude, there are many people in the US who still believe that comics are for children, and that comic books have no place in literature. It's a very simplistic way of thinking, and people like Maher have obviously never read great and nuanced titles like Civil War, The Killing Joke, and Watchmen. What a pity.
Stan Lee passed away last week, November 12, Monday. He was 95 years old at the time of his death.
