Squirrel Girl Stars In Marvel's First Comedy Series

With all the serious Marvel Netflix shows getting all the attention, Marvel Entertainment has greenlighted their first comedy series in the form of the New Warriors. The series will focus on some younger super-powered individuals, and their leader is confirmed to be Doreen Green a.k.a. Squirrel Girl.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Warriors will be under Disney's Freeform banner, and Scrubs writer Kevin Biegel is in talks to write a 10-episode season. The show won't stray too much from the comic interpretation of the New Warriors, focusing on a group of super-powered youngsters who are trying to deal with their powers as well as ther day-to-day lives.

Thanks to the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic, Squirrel Girl has actually gotten a bit more attention, and she's lined up to be the leader of the group, being described as a "tough, optimistic and a natural leader." There's no word on who else would be on the team, but the New Warriors have had quite the roster of members like Firestar, Nova, Speedball, and Namorita.

Anna Kendrick had famously expressed her interest in playing Squirrel Girl last year, but with her status as an actress and the budget of the show, she may well be too expensive to keep in the series. Shannon Purser (Barb from Stranger Things), however, seems to be interested in the character as well, and she might be more affordable to keep on board — plus she has the look down for Doreen Green.

New Warriors is set to come out in 2018.
