Squid Game Actor Lee Jung Jae Dominates Independent Spirit Awards 2022

Squid Game actor Lee Jung Jae is bringing more honor to South Korea’s TV and film industry months after the success of the Netflix series.

Long before Squid Game dominated the international charts, Lee Jung Jae had already been flying high as one of the most successful actors in South Korea. From being a fashion model, he shifted his career and began acting in the 1994 series, Feelings.

Since then, he became the lead star of more notable series, including An Affair, Over the Rainbow, The Last Witness, The Thieves, The Face Reader, and Typhoon.

Although he already grabbed several accolades throughout his decades-old of career, Lee Jung Jae showed his power internationally by scoring more awards for his role in Squid Game.

Lee Jung Jae Wins At Independent Spirit Awards 2022

On Sunday, the 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards launched this year’s ceremony in Santa Monica, California. The event celebrated the success of the best independent films and televisions in 2021.

Lee Jung Jae broke the walls again and beat other nominees for the Best Male Performance in a New Scripted Series category. For what it’s worth, the Squid Game star was up for the award alongside Olly Alexander of It’s a Sin, Michael Greyeyes of Rutherford Falls, Murray Bartlett of The White Lotus, and Ashley Thomas of THEM: Covenant.

Most recently, he won an award at the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards). Together with Jung Ho Yeon, both stars made history as they became the first Korean stars to win the Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series, respectively.

The hit Netflix series also bagged the trophy for Outstanding Performance By A Stunt Ensemble In A Television Series, winning three out of four categories it had been nominated in.

Following the recent successes, Korean Hollywood actress Sandra Oh expressed her happiness and gratitude that the international spotlight finally focused on Korean talents and projects.

Lee Jung Jae Also Scored Awards in 2021

Even last year, Lee Jung Jae already scored the attention of different award-giving bodies.

The New York Times named Lee Jung Jae one of its Breakout Stars of 2021. The multi-awarded daily newspaper noted that the actor became a global streaming sensation after playing the series' main role. For what it's worth, the South Korean star played the role of the protagonist, Seong Gi Hun, in the show. The character is a gambling addict who joins Squid Game to pay off his debt and win back his family.

Aside from Lee Jung Jae, classical musician Eun Sun Kim also made it on the list after becoming the first female music director of a major opera company in the US, San Francisco Opera. The title also made her the first Asian to get the appointment.
