Square Enix’s Avengers Game has NOT Made Up for it Financial Losses

Avengers: Endgame may have been the biggest movie to come out last year, but the Avengers game? It's doing quite terribly.

Reports have been coming out of the studio losing millions on the game, and a good chunk of its player base since launch. Despite being based on one of the most popular IPs out right now, Square has revealed they have not yet turned a profit on the game.

In a recent financial briefing from Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda (via NME), the game has not earned enough to cover the development costs. Matsuda says, "The HD Games sub-segment posted an operating loss as initial sales of Marvel's Avengers were lower than we had expected and unable to completely offset the amortization of the game's development costs."

Besides the terrible reviews for Avengers when the game came out, Matsuda also points out, "In addition to the amortization of that game's development costs, another significant factor associated with the title was the fact that we undertook a major advertising campaign at the time of its launch to make up for delays in our marketing efforts resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic."

If anything, Square is still hoping that they can bounce back from this major stumble. There are still a lot of upcoming DLC available for the game (like the expansion focused on Kate Bishop) and plenty of other playable characters are expected to join the fray. Hopefully, Marvel's Avengers will be able to bounce back sometime next year. As for now though, things are looking pretty grim.

Marvel's Avengers is now playable for Xbox One, PC, and PS4.
