Square Enix Looking Into Games 'As A Service'

With the rise of DLC and expansions for video games, it feels like games aren't just for single playthroughs. Multiplayer titles like Overwatch have been a big success, along with online games that get daily updates and free DLC. Square Enix seems to be aware of this, and it looks like they will be working on games "as a service" in the near future.

"Gone are the days in which single-player games were of primary status and multiplayer games secondary," Square Enix President Yousuke Matsuda told shareholders. It looks like the company will focus on more multiplayer titles, as well as games with long-term playability. Final Fantasy XV seems to be an example of this, with plenty of new content coming including next month's Comrades multiplayer expansion.

Matsuda has also taken notice on the rise of esports, claiming that some people have fun watching others play video games. The company feels that it's only a matter of time before gaming becomes a more mainstream form of media, and Matsuda plans to have Square Enix profit from this endeavor.

It's a move that many might find controversial since Square Enix did make their name with lengthy single-player RPGs like Final Fantasy. Admittedly, the company hasn't fully given up on single-player games with the Legend of Mana remake and the recent re-release of Final Fantasy IX. However, one has to wonder if future releases like the Final Fantasy VII remake or Kingdom Hearts 3 will be affected by this.
