In case you weren't aware, a SpongeBob SquarePants prequel is currently in the works over at Nickelodeon and CBS All Access. The spinoff series is titled KampKoral: SpongeBob's Under Years which will follow the summer camp exploits of a 10-year-old SpongeBob along with other beloved characters from the cartoon series like Patrick, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward. As of now, the series is slated to run for 13 episodes.
Nickelodeon and the CBS streaming service which will soon rebrand to Paramount+ have unveiled our first look at the upcoming show. The official promo image sees SpongeBob and the gang having some fun time in the camp, well, with the exception of the killjoy Squidward, of course. However, the biggest surprise following the image's debut is the fact that Kamp Koral is actually set to ditch the cartoon series' animation style we've all been used to and will go 3D just like in the films. Considering the hit Nick show has been around for over two decades now, it's a little surprising that they're only doing a spinoff project now but hey, I guess it's never too late to expand the SpongeBob universe. It's also interesting if this new series will open the doors for potential prequel projects featuring other characters from the iconic cartoon show. Maybe? Maybe not. We'll have to wait and see. This show looks promising, not to mention extremely fun.
