Spider-Man: No Way Home Disqualified from Competing at BAFTA Film Awards

Spider-Man: No Way Home is a huge success at the box office and it has also been received well by the audience and the critics for its terrific conclusion to the "Homecoming" trilogy in the MCU and its wonderful way of connecting to the past Spider-Man films. Now, the film is being campaigned for awards consideration but it looks like there is one major awards-giving body that it won't be eligible to compete.

According to Deadline, Spider-Man: No Way Home has been disqualified to compete at this year's BAFTA Awards. This comes after Sony failed to upload the film to BAFTA's online streaming platform, BAFTA View, in time to qualify for the eligibility criteria. The studio tried to strike an exemption, but they didn't agree on a solution.

BAFTA said in a statement, "Spider-Man: No Way Home did not meet the eligibility criteria for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 and therefore did not qualify for entry. As outlined in our rulebook, all films must be made available to voting members on BAFTA View prior to Round One voting closing to ensure fairness and parity for all titles and the film was not made available by the distributor."

It is unknown why Sony didn't upload the film to the streaming platform, but it was speculated that it might be because they want to stick with the theatrical window and there are also fears over piracy if it is made available on an online streaming platform. This year also marks the first time that the distributors are not allowed to send DVD screeners.

The news might be unfortunate for the film here as they lost the opportunity to be considered in one of the major award-giving bodies this season. However, the film is still eligible to compete at the Oscars where its awards campaign is mostly focused on so they still have a chance to be considered for awards. Nomination voting doesn't start until the 27th of this month so they still have time to make sure that the voters will be able to see the film.
