Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Peter Parker Will Face a Different Kind of Flash Thompson

High school has always been a challenging period for some kids. And in the case of some heroes who aren't exactly in the popular clique, this becomes even more of a challenge.

Peter Parker is not exempted from all of this. But instead of the usual big-guy bullying that we saw back in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man starring Tobey Maguire, the Flash Thompson in Spider-Man: Homecoming will be using a different brand of weapon: words.

Tony Revolori has been cast as Flash, who in the comics is the stereotype of a high school football-playing jock. Spider-Man: Homecoming may be putting a more modern spin to the character by giving him a smarter and more dangerous way of bullying.

Speaking in an interview (via CBM), actor Tom Holland explained just how Flash will be bullying our beloved Pete.

"American high schools are so different to British ones. Bullying wasn't really a thing, so when they cast Flash Thompson they knew they didn't need a 6 foot, 5-inch jock to beat Peter Parker up. They needed a rich, smug kid commenting on how bad his trainers were. And I did it to practice my American accent."

This would be an interesting twist, as it not only revamps the usual idea of guy bullying—we all know how girl bullying goes in girl world thanks to Mean Girls—but it also puts some sort of perspective to how Pete will be receptive to this kind of treatment in school.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be out in theaters on July 7.
