Marvel Universe Expands Even More With New Hint from Monsters Unleashed

Monsters Unleashed has finally arrived, and it brings not only a bevy of monsters, but also the Bloodstones and a familiar face.

Newsarama got the scoop from creators Cullen Bunn and Steve McNiven, who shared their thoughts on the direction that Monsters Unleashed will pursue.

"I wanted this series to stand apart from those other events in a way that a new reader could pick this book up and enjoy a fun story and understand who the heroes were and what the threat they were united against without having to read a lot of material in preparation."

Bunn puts this book in the middle of Civil War II and IvX, with the storyline set to progress within only a few but very frantic days.

Still, even as Monsters Unleashed stands apart from the rest of the comics, Bunn teases that it will be introducing a new threat that will play some role later on in the Marvel Universe.

As the title says, there will be a lot of monsters involved, with the first issue serving as introduction and setup.

"We're going to be introducing a new threat that has ties to the destruction of dozens of worlds. This threat will also have deep ties to the Marvel Universe. In order to combat this force of cataclysm, our heroes will have to rely on something new and unexpected, and will see that Kid Kaiju may be a key to saving the world—a key that has been in play for centuries."

For those who have been following other Marvel comics, Kid Kaiju shouldn't be a new name as he has already appeared in Totally Awesome Hulk. Bunn did say that this was just a prototype introduction of Kid Kaiju as he still had free rein to develop the character in the new series.

Additionally, fans can also expect a bigger role for the Bloodstone family. As those who bear the burden of prophecies, especially the coming of monsters, it would be interesting to see how the family, particularly Elsa, will come to deal with heroes who aren't as well-versed with monsters or with monster experts.

Monsters Unleashed #1 is already out, with more issues expected from a group of A-lister creators from Marvel's roster.
