When we were given a glimpse of a younger Peter Parker, it still kind of made sense. Technically, he was in high school back when Tobey Maguire starred in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie.
Tom Holland also looked the part of the geeky but innocent and adorable Peter Parker. Then the camera panned out in Captain America: Civil War while he addresses "May" and we get a first look of who Aunt May is.
Some were pleasantly surprised and even hopeful that Tony Stark will find love again after the fall-out with Pepper Potts. Others, including myself, were a little jolted. That's not Aunt May, and she needs to be this little old lady who had lost her long-time just-as-old husband Uncle Ben in that iconic incident.
Apparently, actress Marisa Tomei had the same thoughts as us. During The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host asked Tomei what she felt about the controversy considering the very wide age gap of the role she is portraying with how she has been dubbed as the "hot aunt" by no less than Tony Stark.
"You can imagine my horror when I was cast, and I started to doing my research. But then I thought, ‘I'm just gonna go with it." And I actually made a case to age me up but no, they didn't do it."
I'm more interested in what her backstory will be in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Uncle Ben dying is something that I would still want to see. Those six months that Peter has already had those powers before Stark steps in may actually be quite crucial, as anything could happen there related to Uncle Ben, but my other theory is that Stark may be able to fill in those empty shoes. I just wonder how bizarre it would be if the iconic words "With great power comes great responsibility" will come out from Stark's mouth.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be out in theaters on July 7.
