Spider-Man: Freshman Year is one of the many upcoming animated series that Marvel Studios has been working on for a while now. It will center on the origins of Peter Parker as he is on his way to becoming the titular hero that we know and love.

However, the series is not part of the main MCU timeline and, instead, it is set in another universe that exists somewhere within the multiverse.

For a while now, we've been hearing some casting reports for the series including the actors who will take over to voice the characters in this new iteration including Hudson Thames as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, reprising from What If...?

Now, we have another new casting report for one of the main villains of the series and, as expected, he will be played by a new actor instead.

According to a recent copyright listing from Disney (via The Direct), Hannibal star Hugh Dancy has been tapped to voice Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus (aka Doc Ock) in Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

The Emmy-nominated actor is taking over the role from Alfred Molina, who played the character in the live-action Spider-Man films including 2021's No Way Home.

He is joining the voice cast that already includes Thames, Eugene Byrd, Grace Song, Kari Wahlgren, Zeno Robinson, Paul F. Tompkins, and Charlie Cox, who is so far the only actor from the live-action projects who will reprise their MCU role in the animated series.

Considering that the main characters in the series were mostly recast with new actors instead of bringing back the ones from the live-action films, it's not surprising that they did the same for the role of Doc Ock.

Dancy is more known as an actor in live-action films and TV shows such as Hannibal, Ella Enchanted, and many more. He is the most prominent cast member in the series that was reported so far aside from Cox.

Nevertheless, it is still great casting since we've seen in his past works that he always has the gravitas as an actor and there's no doubt that he can pull off the voice role of an iconic villain like Doc Ock.

It is interesting to see now what this upcoming series' take on Doc Ock will look like in comparison to the live-action MCU iteration or the past animated Spider-Man shows.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year is currently slated to release on Disney+ in 2024.
