  • Quick Answer: Frank Castle (The Punisher) serves as a gritty mentor and ally to Peter Parker, filling the void left by his forgotten former friends.

After a major shakeup following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker’s inner circle is set for a huge change in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The trailer for the MCU’s first 2026 movie shows Peter teaming up with Frank Castle, aka the Punisher.

Does this mean Frank will become Peter’s new close friend, potentially replacing Ned? Read on to find out.

Is the Punisher Peter Parker’s New Best Friend in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

The Brand New Day trailer shows a surprising rapport between the Punisher and Spider-Man, despite the stark contrast between their personas.

Spider-Man is known for his youthful exuberance and moral purity as Marvel’s flagship hero, while the Punisher is defined by his darkly cynical, adult approach to crime-fighting.

Yet, Peter can be seen calling Frank by his first name after taking out his Battle Van, signaling a new kind of closeness now that he has lost his friend, Ned.

Following the memory-erasing events of No Way Home, the fourth Spider-Man movie will feature a four-year time jump.

Ned and even MJ no longer recognize Peter despite reuniting with him. Even Bruce Banner doesn’t know who Spider-Man is, showing Peter’s evolution into a street-level hero much like the Punisher.

The trailer also shows Frank expressing concern for Peter, saying, “You’re losing it, kid,” in one scene. In addition, instead of webbing Frank to the police, Peter simply tells him to “go home” amid the threat of the Vigilante Task Force, showing a level of trust and understanding.

This mirrors Matt Murdock’s relationship with Frank in Daredevil, as Murdock stops the Punisher without approving of his methods. Peter does the same, preventing Frank from crossing the line rather than turning him in.

At one point, Peter and Frank are even shown fighting crime together, signaling the beginnings of a genuine friendship. By the looks of it, the Punisher is now Spider-Man's new ally.

What Will Be Spider-Man’s Dynamics with the Punisher?

Brand New Day will see Spider-Man’s rebirth following the death of Aunt May and his best friends losing their memory of him

Grappling with loneliness, Peter is about to cross paths with the Punisher. But how will their dynamic unfold in the movie?

According to Tom Holland, their relationship will start with animosity but evolve into a sibling-like rivalry.

“It started as this relationship of two people that really kind of hate each other, and then as we started improvising, it became this big brother-little brother rivalry,” he told Empire State Building.

Despite the Punisher coming from the “R-rated” side of the MCU, Holland is excited for fans to see Frank Castle in the film.

He even teased that Jon Bernthal “absolutely sings in this movie” and that the filmmakers essentially “picked him up and plonked him into Spider-Man’s world.”

Holland and Bernthal have been friends in real life; Bernthal even helped Holland film his audition tape for Spider-Man: Homecoming while they were working together on the 2017 film The Pilgrimage

With this real-life friendship, their on-screen bond is expected to shine through, with Holland calling it his “favorite dynamic that [he’d] ever seen with Spider-Man.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
