Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Director Reveals the Truth Behind the MCU Easter Egg

In just a few weeks, the long-awaited animated superhero sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will finally arrive in theaters and a lot of fans are looking forward to seeing Miles Morales' next multiverse adventure alongside the other variants of Spider-Man.

During the second trailer that they released, they revealed the film's MCU easter egg as they showed Miguel O'Hara making a reference to the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home when he said, "And don't even get me started on Doctor Strange and that little nerd on Earth-199999."

Fans are starting to wonder whether the moment in the trailer is hinting at the upcoming film's connection to the MCU that might potentially lead to an interaction between the animated Miles Morales and Tom Holland's Spider-Man.

In a recent interview with SFX (via Digital Spy), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Kemp Powers addressed the film's MCU easter egg where he clarified that the reference is just "a little bit meta" and it will not be tied to the MCU.

"The world of Miles Morales and Spider-Verse, it's not tied into the Marvel Cinematic Universe or anything like that. But this is a Lord and Miller film," he explained.

"We like to have a little bit of fun, we like to be a little bit meta and to acknowledge the world in which we are creating these stories. That's the best way to explain it."

Powers also teased that fans could expect another gag in the film that will leave them "stunned."

"This isn't something where we did anything in conjunction with Marvel. Miles's universe, trust me, there's plenty to work with," he added.

"That gag is one of many, and my favorite gag is one that people don't know about yet. But I think when they see it, they're going to be pretty stunned. It's a serious film, but it's also a film with a lot of fun in it."

It was really exciting to see the MCU easter egg in the second trailer since it felt like a hint that the upcoming film might connect to the main Marvel franchise and it is also curious to see what other surprises or references they have in store for the next Spider-Verse adventure.
