After news came out that Don Cheadle was cast in Space Jam 2, it looked like the movie was finally going smoothly behind the scenes. News just dropped, though, that original director Terrence Nance has left the project, and now WB has found someone else to helm.

As per Deadline, the studio has hired Malcolm D. Lee (Soul Men, Girls Trip) to take over for Nance who left due to creative differences. The studio splitting with Nance was said to be amicable though, but you never really hear about bad blood until weeks after the news gets out.

So far, it looks like the movie is still going to keep its original release date with Lee on board. I mean, it's a Space Jam movie. It's actually amazing how popular the original got when it came out. The film hasn't really aged that well, but you have to hand it to the film for having a great soundtrack.

For now, Space Jam 2 seems to be proceeding as scheduled. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is currently attached as producer and LeBron James is set to star. Besides Don Cheadle, the movie also stars Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery) and NBA stars Damian Lillard, Anthony Davis, and Klay Thompson. WNBA stars Nneka Ogwumike and Diana Taurasi are also said to be part of the cast.

We don't really know what story Space Jam 2 has in store for us, but hopefully, this kicks off a new age of Looney Tunes films. After news broke out that Tony Hawk was supposed to star in a Skate Jam, I was kind of bummed that the film didn't push through.

For now, Space Jam 2 is set to come out July 16, 2021.
